Prostate What?

Prostate What?

Let’s talk about prostate! It is the tubuloalveolar exocrine gland of the male reproductive system. It is found below the bladder and in front of the bowel. Its main function is to store and secrete a slight alkaline fluid, milky and white in appearance that constitutes 20-30% of the volume of the semen along with spermatozoa and seminal vesicle fluid.

But it is sad to note that this organ of the males has been the target of some disorders such as Prostatitis, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Prostatodynia and of course, Prostate Cancer. These disorders have common signs and symptoms like the following:
  • Waking frequently at night to urinate
  • Sudden or urgent need to urinate
  • Difficulty in starting to urinate
  • Slow flow of urine and difficulty in stopping
  • Discomfort when urinating
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Decrease in libido (sex urge)
  • Reduced ability to get an erection
Prostatitis is just an inflammation or swelling of the prostate. It can be painful all the time when passing urine or with ejaculation. It can be treated with antibiotics.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is the enlargement of the prostate. It is usual among men in their 50s. It is common but not life-threatening. This is also can be treated using antibiotics however in some cases, an operation is required.

Prostatodynia is a long standing or chronic prostate disease.

Prostate Cancer is the only one that is life-threatening. And the alarming fact is that it can be acquired without any symptoms. It is the second largest cause of deaths among men following lung cancer. Unlike BPH, prostate cancer cells invade other parts of the body especially the bones and the lymph nodes.

Surgery in case of BPH may have a temporary effect on sexual function. A lot of men can proceed to their sexual activities after a year from surgery. It is normal to experience erection problems and loss of bladder control after s surgical operation.

Taking good care of your prostate is the best thing that you can do today. Do not wait for the time that you will just regret.
